What does it mean to live in the West today? Do people tend to identify with states, with regions, or with the larger West? This book examines the development of regional identity in the American West, demonstrating that it is a regionally diverse entity made up of many different wests -- Great Plains, Southwest, Rocky Mountains, southwest region of the united state and more -- in which American regionalism finds its fullest expression. These fourteen original essays tell how a sense of place emerged among residents of various regions southwest region of the united state and how a sense of those places was developed by people outside of them. Expedition to the Southwest: An 1845 Reconnaissance of Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, & Oklahoma by J. W. Abert,

Lieutenant James William Abert (1820-97) of the United States Army Topographical Engineers received orders in 1845 to explore the Canadian River region of the southern plains -- an area covering present-day Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, southwest region of the united state and Oklahoma. Although this land was still in Mexican territory, the United States had gradually abandoned most of the diplomatic niceties regarding its boundaries with Mexico by that time. Abert set out from Bent's Fort to conduct a detailed reconnaissance.
